Happy Birthdays

This year's birthday week was dampened by quarantine... but it didn't stop us from loving one another!

The Drowsy Chaperone

MHS Drama did it again.... they put on another absolutely amazing show!

I had never heard of The Drowsy Chaperone until this winter when Hamp started rehearsals. It proved to be a wonderfully fun and funny show with great music and perfect for our little high school troupe.

And Hamp.... oh my. I knew from past occasions that he enjoyed being on stage and making people laugh... but I didn't realize how far he could take it until this weekend when he strolled on to stage as Adolpho, the hapless lothario!

All of the kids were fantastic in this show, but I especially loved watching this funny band of brothers show off their skills as well! Singing, dancing, great stage presence, and so dapper!
I was really proud of them...

If you have about four free minutes and want to be thoroughly entertained
by Hamp's on-stage antics as Adolpho seducing the Drowsy Chaperone...

a merry christmas

We snuck over to the East Coast for a Christmas Day visit to Mojo & Dado!

We spent most of our time inside eating, drinking, playing games and watching movies!
But of course I had to get outside for some salt air, sand & sunsets on the lagoon.
And I took personal responsibility for making sure John-Jefferson saw the other side of the Atlantic Ocean!

alma mater

When you're in the panhandle of Florida already... there's no reason NOT to swing by Tallahassee on Christmas Eve Eve and take a little self-guided tour based on 20+ year old memories of my old collegiate stomping grounds!
When we pulled up to campus I told the boys there were really only 4 sites I was forcing them to visit - anything else on campus would be up to them.

1) Doak Campbell Stadium
When I was at FSU the Seminoles were dominating college football - winning a National Championship in '93 to kick off my college experience! So I spent a lot of weekends in the fall celebrating in Doak Campbell and succumbing to all the school traditions. However, the stadium as it is now is not where I did the war chant... so of course I had to see (and show off!) the new & improved version. We were not disappointed.... well, only that we couldn't go inside and see the 50-yard line!

2) Landis Hall - my freshmen dorm!

3) the Chi Omega house
This led to a litany of questions from all 3 boys about what a sorority is and why I was in one!

4) Westcott Fountain
Our final stop was somewhat anti-climactic to the boys (who were just anxious to get to dinner!) but sentimental to me as the last time I was there I looked like this:

We ended the tour with a swing through Bill's Bookstore for a little Garnet & Gold swag. And while I may not have been the best guide (what with my waxing nostalgic about stuff they didn't understand!) the gorgeous campus sure did it's job of enticing a few future Seminoles!

opportunity

This Christmas did not go as planned... that's what I get for trying to plan something during an ongoing pandemic!

We were supposed to meet cousins & grandparents at the beach for a pre-Christmas getaway. Then covid continued to be a serious concern and everyone preferred to stay separated - wisely so.

However, my crew preferred to travel and I still had a big condo at the beach rented. So we took the opportunity to invite the boys' friends on a 3-day holiday getaway to the Gulf Coast.

It was as safe as we could imagine - airports and plane trips were sterile and compliant, people were respectful and masked, and the beach was veritably vacant! Social distancing at its best....

So for a few days these 6 boys played in the sand, numbed themselves to the cold waters, warmed up in the pool and relaxed on the balcony - forgetting about single digit temps back home and enjoying a little change of scenery....

My favorite moment of the trip?
Coming up from the beach to find this:

All six of these teenage boys were unplugged - even if just for an afternoon!

While we miss our family desperately and can't wait until it's safe to all be together again, I am happy that I had this once-in-a-lifetime chance to show these boys how wonderful beach living can be...
